Amble / Privacy
Your moments.
Your information.
Privacy information for the current development app. Updated 29 October 2026.
Your journal
Walks, photos, notes, sounds, and finds are saved on your iPhone first. There is no Amble account or Amble server. Journal in iCloud, on by default in a new installation, stores saved pages and their original photos and sounds in Amble’s private space in your iCloud account. Unfinished walks and drafts stay on the device. You can turn Journal in iCloud off in Settings.
Location
Location is used to draw a route while you record a walk, and once when you ask for places nearby. Pausing or finishing a walk stops route recording. You can keep a journal without a route.
Camera, photos, and microphone
These are used only for the moments you choose to keep: a photo, a picture from your library, the sounds around you, or a voice memo. Photos you take in Amble are also saved to your photo library when you allow it.
Maps, weather, and place names
Map tiles come from OpenStreetMap, so its servers see the map areas you look at. Weather and place names come from Apple Weather and Apple’s place lookup, using where a walk starts and where its photos were taken. If Apple Weather doesn’t answer, Open-Meteo is asked instead, with the position rounded to about 100 meters.
Places to wander
When you tap Find places nearby, Apple Maps is searched around your position, and public OpenStreetMap servers (Overpass) are asked about an area rounded to about a kilometer. Results are kept on your iPhone for a while, so the same area isn’t asked about again.
Sharing
Postcards, GPX files, and booklets contain only what you choose to share. The first and last 200 meters of a route are left off by default, and you can also hide where photos were taken and the name of the area. Shared photos are re-encoded to remove camera details such as location. Your own writing and what is visible in a photo stay part of what you share.
No tracking
Amble has no ads, analytics, or tracking. If something goes wrong, the error note stays on your iPhone.
